Hi folks! I picked up a gem of a car. Its a 65 Signet with a 273 auto 8 3/4 rear Big bolt pattern all the way around. Body is in pretty good condition. It was in an accident, I have most of the sheet metal.

Bad news is the guy left the hood off and it rained pretty bad, for a while there was a good amount of fresh water in the motor, no rusting any where except a minor spot that came clean with a hone.

Motor turns over freely, I soaked the cylinders with Marvel for a couple days. Right now the intake and heads are off of it. Everything looks good. When we drained the oil there was no traces of rust or anything. In fact the water was crystal clear.

So I am wondering if its worth it to put it back together to see if its ok or pull it out and do the whole rebuild.

Its my sons car so he is learing, I am in the Navy and time is more important than money.

Any thoughts??

Nice little Val. From the pics the motor looks pretty good. I would do a compression test and if that turns out good, I'd run it !

Thanks for the inputs, I have gotten a few nods from here and FABO to put the engine back together and run it and drain the oil x2 or so. It turns over real easy with just a socket there is so much Marvel in it right now. I picked up a weiand intake along with a Carter AFB.

Gonna make it a Cuda notch back with the front end. I will post pictures as it goes.

It will probably be fine. My biggest concern might be the lifters, they look like they might have been under water especially there in the back of the lifter valley. I would prime the oil system and turn the motor over by hand a few revolutions at the same time. Not a bad practice for any motor that has sat for a while.

I thought that the only company to produce a four barrel intake for the 64-65 273 was offenhauser, and I think it is now out of production...

It actually has late model 318 heads. The guy tried putting the 65 intake back on it and had to wholler out the holes on the intake which never seated right I guess it had vacuum leaks. So I got the weiand cheap. This will work to get the car going.

Mr. Fstfish66; do you know if there is adequate underhood clearance to run the edelbrock air gap intake? I am currently running a performer, but with the "J" heads. I would like to use the airgap, but don't think there is enough room in the pre '67 cars. Thanks.

OK fellas, I got the heads off and coated the cylinders with Marvel and turned it by hand. Here are some pics. I plan on putting in back together soon.
