Back space is the distance from the hub mounting surface of the rim to the back lip of the rim.
What changes the back space distance is the offset which is usually measured in mm. You can go to this site
http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp
and play with the offset being + or - and see how it affects back space.
I'm sure someone on here can give a better explanation than me though.
The rims I have on my 65 Cuda are 5.95 back space and it allowed me to put a 275 in the stock wheel well of my cuda without rubbing.
Tire rack probably has a explanation of back space.
